Gunma Travel Guide

by Travel Editor

Discover a whole new side of Japan in Gunma Prefecture! With its stunning lakes, tranquil valleys, and rejuvenating hot springs, Gunma is the ultimate destination for a relaxing golf getaway. With over 80 courses to choose from, you might find yourself spoiled for choice. The best part? Gunma is just a quick one-hour train ride from Tokyo, making it the perfect spot for a spontaneous golf weekend, even during a hectic business trip to the capital. Here’s everything you need to know about your next favorite golfing haven.

What To Do

Gunma offers a wealth of outdoor activities to enjoy between rounds of golf, with its natural attractions being a major draw.

The biggest highlight is undoubtedly its hot springs, or onsen. For a quintessential Japanese bathing experience, visit Kusatsu Onsen, one of Japan's top three onsen, renowned for its historical Edo Period bathing methods and ranked the number one hot spring by travel experts. For a tranquil retreat, Shima Onsen provides a sleepy town ambiance along the pristine Shima River, with ryokan (traditional inns) that inspired the animated film Spirited Away.

In addition to its famous onsens, Gunma boasts beautiful flora and fauna. Explore Lake Nozoriko, home to over 300 species, admire the stunning Japanese azaleas at Kazawa Yunomaru Plateau, or hike around Mount Kusatsu-Shirane and the emerald-green Yugama lake.

Flavors of Gunma

Gunma’s culinary offerings range from sweet to savory and everything in between, often combining both for a unique taste experience.

For a homey dish that's both sweet and salty, try okkirikomi. This winter staple features hand-cut noodles and seasonal vegetables cooked in a mirin and shoyu-based hot pot broth, with a miso-based version also popular.

For a sweet and savory snack, sample yaki-manjuu. Made from wheat flour fermented in sake, these fluffy balls are coated with a sweet-savory miso sauce and grilled to perfection, best enjoyed hot off the grill.

Health-conscious eaters will love konnyaku, a low-calorie food made from the devil’s tongue plant with a jelly-like texture, often enjoyed with various toppings.

Festivals and Happenings

Kick off the year by attending one of the many Daruma-Ichi festivals. The Shorinzan Nanakusa Taisai Daruma Ichi in Hanadaka-machi, the country's largest, draws over 200,000 visitors seeking lucky charms like daruma dolls for business success, good health, and academic achievement. This festival will be held on January 6-7, 2024.

In spring, experience the Daija Festival at Oigami Onsen on May 5, 2024, where locals carry a serpent-shaped portable shrine, or join the Samurai Marathon along the historic Kyu-Nakasendo highway on May 12, 2024.

Every other year in early October, Nakanojo transforms into an art museum for the Nakanojo Biennale. In 2024, this event will take place from September 7 to October 14. Later, visit Minowa on October 26, 2024, to witness the Minowa no Sato no Kitsune no Yomeiri, or Fox’s Wedding, where participants dressed as foxes recreate a traditional wedding ceremony.

What to bring back

Gunma produces a variety of quality items that make for wonderful souvenirs. Buy a Takasaki daruma doll for a piece of the culture and some added luck. This prefecture is the leading producer of these little charms, and the Takasaki ones symbolize luck and longevity. Silk items are another fantastic alternative. This region is famous for its silk, cultivating the textile for centuries. Kiryuu Fabrics has produced quality textiles for over 1000 years.
