Top 10 Golf Courses in the Greater Tokyo Area | Golf in Japan
The Greater Tokyo area is home to nearly 37 million people and a huge community of golfers. Yet 18-hole golf courses are scarce in central Tokyo, where land is at a premium. A handful of exclusive clubs sit on the outskirts, but most local golfers head to neighboring prefectures for a day on the course. Here are ten courses serving the Tokyo area that we think are well worth the trip and visitor-friendly, within 1-1.5 hours from Tokyo.
Narita Golf Club
A firm favourite with the Golf in Japan team, Narita Golf Club has everything we love to see in a golf course: thoughtful design, excellent conditioning, and a balance of fun and challenge. The course designer, Kawada, once described it this way: “Eighteen self-contained stories come together to form one long narrative.” It certainly makes for a memorable round—and a story to take home with you.
The club feels exclusive yet welcoming. With the clubhouse overlooking the finishing holes, anticipation builds before you even step onto the course. And with Narita Golf Club close to the airport, it’s easy to reach by taxi from one of the many nearby airport hotels.

Tokyo Bayside Golf Course
With sweeping views of Tokyo Bay, Yokohama’s Minato Mirai and, on clear days, Mount Fuji, this hilly course makes a memorable day out. The rolling terrain brings elevated tee shots, forced carries and opportunities to shape your shots, offering an enjoyable challenge for golfers of all skill levels.
Water hazards on the finishing holes add drama and provide a challenging end to the round. Ride-on carts make it easier to navigate the hills, while the clubhouse and restaurant offer panoramic coastal views to enjoy alongside your meal.
Renting a car is a convenient way to reach the course, with access via the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line making the journey straightforward.
Chiba Birdie Club
Chiba Birdie Club’s 18-hole course stretches to 7,036 yards and makes full use of its natural setting. Mature trees, ponds and streams bring beauty and strategy into play. With less than eight metres of elevation change, the landscape feels gentle, yet the course still offers a rewarding challenge.
The clubhouse is another highlight. From the restaurant terrace, you can look out over ornamental carp ponds framed by a Japanese garden. Add an excellent menu and it’s easy to see why lunch is part of the experience here. Chiba Birdie Club also takes pride in its abundant seasonal flowers and trees, describing itself as the golf course with the most blooms in Japan.
