Playing golf near Mount Fuji is about more than the view- it's a total vibe. Undoubtedly, one of the most popular area for golf in Japan, the region offers historic clubs, unbelievable scenery (well, we are talking about Mt. Fuji!), and refined experiences that are a must-play for any Japan golf itinerary.
So, if you’re planning a golf trip to Japan, or are already in Japan, here are five courses that we recommend you play; each has something different to offer, but all are a day trip from Tokyo and guaranteed to give you an unforgettable day at the foot of Japan’s most awesome mountain.
For golfers seeking a beautiful, challenging course with memorable Mount Fuji views, Narusawa Golf Club never disappoints. The 18-hole forest course sits at around 1,100 metres above sea level, with wide fairways and fast greens, framed by beautiful native alpine forests and with water features throughout.
Voted as one of the most challenging courses in Yamanashi prefecture, it regularly hosts professional tournaments on the JLPGA tour. The signature experience is the par 3 eighth hole, where golfers play across a lake towards Mount Fuji. The mountain also comes into view from several other holes, making Narusawa a strong choice for golfers who want a championship-level golf and amazing views of Fuji.
The course closes for the winter season. Dec- March bookings accepted all year round.
Opened in 1935, Fuji Golf Course is steeped in Japanese golf lore, and offers a one of the best examples of Japanese course design. It was the first golf course in Yamanashi Prefecture, and its setting near Lake Yamanaka gives the round a resort feel.
Designed by Kazue Akashi, the course is mature, with fairways hemmed in by Japanese red pines. Subtle bunkering and contouring make the course feel natural and inviting. Players can choose between caddie service and self-play, with walking rounds and two-person carts available for self-play. After golf, the natural hot spring is a must, and a great way to finish the day.
For a more luxurious golf experience, Gora Kadan Fuji will not disappoint. From the moment you step inside, the newly opened clubhouse makes a striking impression, with refined finishes and an unmistakably five-star feel. The chic restaurant features expansive windows framing views of Mount Fuji, with a menu that brings together Japanese and Western cuisine. And after your round, a soak in the natural hot spring is a must.
The property offers 36 holes across two courses. The Fuji Course is reserved for members, while the Kagosaka Course offers visitors an equally memorable round. Its 18 holes wind through rolling hills and mature red pines. The landscape may look gentle at first, but thoughtfully placed trees and hazards reward careful course management. Reachable par 5s create tempting risk-and-reward opportunities, while several holes offer exceptional views of Mount Fuji.
For golfers seeking a distinctive setting, an elegant clubhouse and a more indulgent day on the course, Gora Kadan Fuji is an outstanding choice.
Dai Fuji Golf Club is a convenient choice for golfers travelling by Shinkansen. The journey from Tokyo Station to Shin-Fuji Station takes around an hour, followed by a taxi ride of approximately 30 minutes to the course. That makes Dai Fuji one of the easiest Mount Fuji-area courses to reach by train—and a convenient stop for golfers travelling between Tokyo and Osaka or Kyoto.
Unlike many courses in the area, Dai Fuji operates year-round, offering the chance to see Mount Fuji in its snow-covered winter beauty. Opened in 1954, the 18-hole, par-72 course was designed by Nobukatsu Marumo and is among Shizuoka Prefecture’s oldest golf courses. Though relatively short, it rewards accuracy and thoughtful course management over sheer distance. Its varied layout combines open, exposed holes with more challenging tree-lined stretches, creating an enjoyable test for a wide range of golfers.
Fuji Classic makes a memorable final stop for golfers seeking a course that feels like its actually on Mount Fuji. Set at around 1,200 metres above sea level, the 18-hole, par-72 course is designed around wide mountain views, with Mount Fuji visible from all 18 holes. Its elevation makes it a lot cooler in summer but unfortunately has the smallest open window from March-November
The course was designed by Desmond Muirhead and draws inspiration from Katsushika Hokusai’s Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, making it one of the most fun and interesting courses of the region. Its highland setting brings changing winds and dramatic scenery into play, while the layout offers a distinct contrast to the more traditional parkland and forest courses in the region.
